Los jugadores controlan a los héroes o villanos de las famosas películas de «El Señor de los Anillos». Con personajes de héroe similares a los de la serie «Warcraft», controlas tanto los ejércitos como a todos los héroes únicos. El juego amplía lo logrado por Las Dos Torres, con esta secuela de acción y aventura que introduce tres historias distintas de la película: una que sigue a Aragorn, Legolas y Gimli, como en Las Dos Torres; otra que sigue a Gandalf; y una tercera que sigue a Frodo y Sam, con Merry, Pippin y Faramir como personajes desbloqueables. También se ampliaron las características de juego, incluyendo el modo multijugador.

The Lord of the Rings:The Third Age introduces entirely new characters which aren't mentioned in the books or movies. The game does relate to the movies by including scenes from all three movies, with new background speech by Ian McKellen (Gandalf).

There are seven playable characters in the game which have been created specifically for it, as well a small appearances by characters such as Gandalf, Aragorn, Eowyn, Faramir, and Gothmog.

The game covers events in all three movies/books, mostly with references to major events shown through cut scenes, or the scenes from the movies with Ian McKellan's narration.

A classic RPG game, The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age has gameplay elements similar to Final Fantasy, where you have a party of characters, each with a different set of skills and attributes, who gain levels, making them stronger as the game progresses. Battles are turn-based, and let the gamer make different decisions on what they want to do to change the outcome of the battle. The game travels through many areas throughout Tolkien's Middle Earth, including The Pelennor Fields and Moria.

The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar

Much of the gameplay is typical of the MMO format: The player controls a character avatar which can be moved around the game world and interacts with other players, non-player (computer-controlled) characters (or "NPCs") and other entities in the virtual world. Camera angles can be switched between first-person and third-person options. Characters are improved by gaining levels. A character's level increases after it earns a set amount of experience points through the player versus environment (or "PvE") combat and storyline adventures. Characters' abilities are improved by increasing in level, but character skills must be purchased from specified NPCs after gaining a new level.
The main storyline (also known as the "Epic Quest Line") is presented as a series of "Books", which consist of series of quests called "Chapters". There were initially eight Books when the game was released, with new books added with each free content update.
Tolkien's Middle-earth as represented in The Lord of the Rings Online implements magic in a different manner than other MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft. There are only five "wizards" in the fictional world, none of which are player-controlled. Instead, there are active skills which require "power" (the equivalent of magic points). Some skills behave like magic (like healing or throwing a burning ember at an enemy), but are based on "lore". In addition, objects and artifacts are used to create effects similar to magic.
Other features include a fast travel system and a detailed quest log with tracker and history.

The Lord of the Rings: War of the Ring

The quest to destroy the One Ring continues in the first real-time strategy game based on The Lord of the Rings saga. Massive battles erupt as the forces of light and darkness fight for control of Middle-earth. The more units you destroy, the more experience and visual enhancements you earn. Play as the forces of good and valiantly fight for the ring's destruction or play as the forces of evil to claim control over Middle-earth forever.
