Mugen Senshi Valis: The Fantasm Soldier

Yuko Ahso was once an ordinary high school girl. Or least her life used to be ordinary. Her friend Reiko went out on a date with a Dark King named Rogles, and has vanished. Immediately, monsters attacked her. She thought she would die for sure, but a mystic sword named Valis appeared before her. Using the sword, Yuko defended herself against the monsters, and was whisked to a strange land, where she was told that she was the chosen Valis Warrior and must defeat Rogles, or the human world and the dream world would both be plunged into chaos.

Valis: The Fantasm Soldier is a side-scrolling platformer. Yuko can jump and attack enemies with her Valis sword, which can be upgraded and used as a ranged weapon by collecting power-ups found in the stages. She can also find and use items that grant her powerful all-screen attacks or temporary invincibility. Each stage culminates with a boss battle, after which Yuko's hit points and attributes increase.

Yuko has become the goddess of the world of Vecanti and has watched over the world in peace since the defeat of Glames. Trouble brews when the Dark World prince named Galgear begins to search for a magical ring. This ring increases his powers, but to the loss of control he could have maintained under its effects, and the gods of Vecanti recognize this and imprison Galgear inside a crystal sunk into the ocean.

Fifteen years pass, and Galgear manages to break out of his prison, kidnapping the former heroine Valna and being pursued by troops led by Cham as a result. A member of her band, named Lena Brande, requests permission to infiltrate Galgear's stronghold and free Valna.

Valis III

After Yuko has defeated the evil Rogles, peace descended upon Earth and the magical world of Vecanti. But a new threat has arisen: an enigmatic man named Glames from the Dark World, possessor of a sword named Leethus, is planning to conquer both Earth and Vecanti, convinced that there is no other way to save his world from imminent destruction. A young girl from the Dark World named Cham escapes from Glames, and asks Yuko to help her stop him with the aid of her Valis sword.

Like its predecessors in the series, Valis III is a side-scrolling platform action game. Unlike the previous installments, the player can control three characters in the game: Yuko, Cham (who uses a whip and fights similarly to Castlevania protagonists), and princess Valna from Vecanti, who is weaker physically, but can cast more powerful magic. Each of the characters can equip different weapons and has access to her own magic spells.

Valis II

Valis II has the same basic plot as its computer counterpart: Rogles, the tyrant of the magical world Vecanti, was defeated, and a new emperor named Megas is terrorizing its inhabitants. It's up to the Japanese schoolgirl Yuko to take on her persona of the Valis Soldier and vanquish Megas.

Gameplay-wise, this version differs from the computer releases significantly. Though it has six stages that end with the same boss enemies, its level design, layout, and many regular enemies are different. This release also completely removes two key gameplay features of the computer version: the ability to equip different weapons and armor, and the flying side-scrolling shooter stages.

Super Valis IV

Once upon a time, there was a prince named Gallagher. He was entrusted with a magical ring that granted him great powers. But he was too weak to control the power of the ring, and became possessed by it. The mad prince was sealed into a crystal, but many years later managed to break out, planning to wreak havoc on the Dream World and to conquer it! Yuko, the heroine of the three previous Valis games, is no longer a sacred Valis warrior - she has become a goddess. Lena, a young girl who wants to become a Valis warrior, is the new main character, who must prove to Yuko she is worthy to wield the sword of Valis, that will eventually stop the evil plans of Gallagher.

Like the previous games in the series, this is an action platform game. You can fight enemies with melee weapons or use magic. In order to cast magic spells, you must gather special items while fighting off regular enemies. At the end of a level, a boss enemy battle awaits you. The game features cut scenes with animé-style graphics to advance the story.

Yuko Ahso looks like an ordinary grammar school student, but she is actually the Valis Warrior.

"I defeated King Rogles of the Dark World with the Valis sword which was given to me by Queen Valia, but my friend Reiko died in the process" Yuko went home by train after that terrible fight. She didn’t have the slightest idea that she would be summoned to fight again.

"Yuko..." said a familiar voice. “Reiko," said Yuko, "is that you? But I thought you..." Reiko quickly admonished, “Go and see Queen Valia, Yuko. Emperor Megas has threatened Dream World and our friend Vecanti.

When Yuko was told of Vecanti’s great danger, a burning desire moved Yuko to action. She has risen to crush Megas’ ambition!

Valis

The evil king Galgear and his generals have been resurrected after being sealed away for thousands of years and immediately begin their conquest of the human world and the Dreamland, currently ruled by Queen Valna.

With the Warrior of Valis Yuko now in the Heavens and unable to return to the other worlds, there is no one left to stand against Galgear. This is where the new protagonist Lena makes her appearance.

Just like in Valis III before it, players can swap between 3 playable characters at any time. With increased difficulty compared to the previous entries in the series, players have more ways than ever to enjoy clearing stages. The visuals in Valis IV, which includes animated cutscenes with Japanese voice acting that are an absolute must-see, are the best in the series.

Shin-Nihon Laser Soft was a subsidiary of Telenet Japan and Yodobashi founded in October 1988. It was known for its futuristic manga games, mostly the Cosmic Fantasy series.

Laser Soft was founded in October 1988 to focus on games for optical media, especially the PC Engine TurboGrafx CD. In June 1990 the shares by Yodobashi were taken over by Telenet, and in January 1991 Laser Soft was formally merged with Wolf Team. After that the label Laser Soft was kept for further games by Telenet for PC-Engine and other systems until about 1992.
