The king of the Country of Forest in Felix sent out a proclamation all throughout Felix announcing that he was seeking a suitable young man to take his beloved daughter as a bride. Many suitors responded and were subsequently put through a large variety of trials by the king. In the end, the decision was narrowed down to two suitors. One was the prince of the Country of Lakes in Felix, and the other was a wizard who had used his powers to transform himself into a handsome young man.

The princess' heart was set upon the prince of the Country of Lakes, and the two proclaimed their love for one another with an oath. However, after learning about this, the wizard transformed himself into the shape of the prince in order to take the princess for himself. He placed a curse upon the prince and transported him far from Felix, to the other end of the world.

People inhabiting a world called Felix communicate with gods to divine their future. The king of the Forest Country is looking for a husband for his daughter and organizes a tournament for noble young men from different countries. The prince from the Lake Country is victorious, but an evil magician turns him into a strange-looking creature and banishes him to faraway lands. The prince has to travel back and find a way to remove the curse.

Märchen Veil I is an overhead action game with light role-playing elements. The game consists of maze-like stages heavily populated by enemies. The prince has to fight his way through by using ranged magic, which effectively turns the game into a shooter. The magic attack can have different properties depending on the special items picked up by the prince. Throughout the game the player will also find items that restore or permanently increase the protagonist's health. Still-screen scenes (called "visual stages") advance the story between levels.

Established on December 2, 1981, System Sacom Corp. (株式会社システムサコム) was a hardware and software company in Tokyo. It withdrew from the game industry in 1998 and focused on its hardware business. Sacom was responsible for the "Novel Ware" series of adventure games that influenced the sound novel and visual novel genres. Some may also remember the company for its interactive movie games such as Mansion of Hidden Souls and Lunacy.

Sacom was a member of DOG (Disk Original Group), a coalition of companies led by Square that produced games for the Famicom Disk System, and a similar group called Super Software Team, made up of several computer game makers. It was also involved with Scap Trust, a joint venture with seven other software companies.

Yukio Horimoto, creator of Märchen Veil, started Infinity in 1986. Sacom's business software division broke away and became System Sacom Business (later SSB) in 1990. In 1998, Masaharu Inoue founded what is now Ivy-Arts (originally Media Jungle, then Jungle). Umihara Kawase creator Kiyoshi Sakai and character designer Toshinobu Kondo were former Sacom employees.
