Dragon's Lair 3D: Return to the Lair

Dragon's Lair 3D: Return to the Lair is an action-adventure video game released in 2002 by Dragonstone Software. The game is based on Cinematronics' 1983 laserdisc arcade game Dragon's Lair, and follows a similar story; the hero, Dirk the Daring, must enter the evil wizard Mordroc's castle to rescue Princess Daphne from Singe the dragon. Many of the characters and locations from the 1983 original make appearances in the game, along with new puzzles, rooms and enemies. Animator and director Don Bluth, who produced the cartoon animation for the arcade original, also produced two new animated sequences for the opening and ending of the game. The game uses cel shading to mimic the distinctive style of the original.

Haven't heard of Dragon's Lair?! Well, you play the heroic Dirk the Daring, a valiant knight on a quest to rescue the fair princess from the clutches of an evil dragon! Originally released in the summer of 1983, Dragon's Lair has solidified itself as a cultural icon in gaming.

Dragon's Lair is a side-scrolling platform game based on the laserdisc game of the same name released for the Nintendo Entertainment System and developed by the MotiveTime group. Plotwise, the game is identical to the original.

The game is a side-scroller with the character walking slowly. Dirk can walk, crawl, or jump forward, and he has an array of weapons that he can discover and use to dispose of enemies. The controller layout is reversed from other mainstream NES titles, with Select functioning as the Pause-button while Start is used for the Candle object (which helps reveal hidden weapons). Also, B is used for jumping, and A for attacking (the input of the A & B buttons is almost always the opposite in similar NES games).

Two different versions were released later, first for the Famicom, with major improvements on playability and speed, and a second one for PAL regions, expanding upon the Famicom version with new enemies and cutscenes.

Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp

Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp, the followup to Don Bluth's arcade classic Dragon's Lair, can now be enjoyed on your PC. This fully arcade authentic version includes all of the original scenes you've come to enjoy, and even the unreleased Director's Cut ending not seen in the arcades. Other bonuses include a full watch feature to sit back and enjoy Don Bluth's stunning animation.

Interface

The Japanese version of NES Dragon's Lair had a major overhaul in quality, being the fastest version of the game. It also has changes in level design to make the bosses less easier to be cheated.

Full Release

The PAL version of Dragon's Lair expands upon the Japanese version, still having a good speed, but adding new enemy types and cutscenes in-between levels.

Contrary to other multiregional games at the time, the PAL version is a lot faster than the original NTSC version, despite the refresh rate being lower.
