SNK Corporation (株式会社SNK, Kabushiki-gaisha Esu Enu Kē)[7] is a Japanese video game hardware and software company. It is the successor to the company Shin Nihon Kikaku and presently owns the SNK video game brand and the Neo Geo video game platform, and electronics.

SNK is known for its creation of the Neo Geo family of arcade, home, and handheld game consoles in 1990. The Neo Geo line was halted in 2001 because financial troubles forced SNK Corporation to close in the same year. Anticipating the end of the company, Kawasaki established Playmore Corporation in 2001, which acquired all of the intellectual property of the first iteration of SNK Corporation. In 2003, Playmore Corporation was renamed to SNK Playmore Corporation. In 2016, SNK dropped the name Playmore from its logo and reintroduced its old slogan, "The Future Is Now", officially changing its corporate name back to SNK.

Micronics was a primarily anonymous outsource developer, making games for publishers without taking any credit, so information on them is difficult to come by. Here's what we know...

Micronics was formed sometime around 1985 by Kazuo Yagi and Masahiko Tsukada, and spent the NES era primarily developing arcade ports like Elevator Action, Ghosts 'N Goblins and 1942 for publishers like Capcom, Konami, Taito and Pony Canyon. These ports, as well as their original and license-based projects like Super Pitfall, are notable for their lack of quality compared to their contemporaries - low framerate, poor controls, simplistic sound and questionable collision detection are usually all present and accounted for.

In 2007, an anonymous poster on the Japanese message board 2ch claimed that co-founder Yagi was just a college student when he started Micronics with the intent of developing original games, but being stuck doing porting work allegedly led to him ceasing to care about bugs or other quality control issues. How close this is to the truth may never be known...

Athena is a platformer arcade game, also released on a number of consoles. It was developed by SNK for the arcade, and was ported to the NES by Micronics, and a number of other platforms by Ocean Software. The game featured a female protagonist, although explicitly utilizing the female body as a selling-feature for the game.
