The Astyanax is an action game released by Jaleco in 1989. After receiving a divine revelation, a warrior sets out to battle the evil demons and restore peace to the world. Harness the power of the Fire Axe and strike your foes with conviction!

Astyanax

It is a 2D action platform game focused on hack and slash and spell casting. The game consists of six linear levels of which each has two sub-levels meaning the game consists of 12 level in total. After every level there is a cut-scene pushing the story forward.

There are three weapons - an axe, a spear and a big sword. An axe is a basic weapon the hero holds at the beginning of the game. The player can upgrade the axe using a power-up which has the shape of a small axe. The spear is the second stage of the weapon upgrade system and the big sword is the final stage. The big sword is the most powerful melee weapon in the game.

The player can cast three magic spells which using is limited by the magic meter. The first is "Bind", which stops the time altogether with the enemies in the level. The second is "Blast", which casts fire balls destroying all enemies visible on the screen at the time of the casting. The third is "Bolt", which has the form of a lightning strike and acts similarly to "Blast".

Jaleco Ltd. (株式会社ジャレコ, Kabushiki Kaisha Jareko) was a corporate brand name that was used by two previously connected video game developers and publishers based in Japan. The original Jaleco company was founded in 1974 as Japan Leisure Company, founded by Yoshiaki Kanazawa, before being renamed to simply Jaleco in the early 1980s. This company was later acquired in 2000 by PCCW, who rebranded it as their Japanese game division, PCCW Japan, before reverting it to Jaleco in 2002. In 2006, Jaleco became independent from PCCW and renamed to Jaleco Holding, having their video game operations spun off into a new company, also called Jaleco. This new spin-off company was sold to mobile developer Game Yarou in 2009, with Jaleco Holding renaming itself to Encom Holdings shortly after.

Aicom was a Japanese video game developer, founded in 1988. The Sammy Corporation website gives 1990 as its first year and says it was a subsidiary of Jaleco. Sammy bought it in 1992.

Its games include The Mafat Conspiracy, Totally Rad and Vice: Project Doom on the Nintendo Entertainment System, Blaster Master Boy for the Game Boy and Pulstar for Neo Geo.

Aicom broke off from Sammy in 1996 and, with funding from SNK, became Yumekobo, producing games mainly for SNK systems.

Full Release

Astyanax is a side-scrolling platform action game set in a fantasy world. The hero sets out to slay the evil wizard terrorizing the land. He is armed with an ax and also has a magic lightning spell that can be powered-up two times. Magic upgrades and health potions can be found in small stone pillars. The player needs to beat monsters in a number of locales, jumping across pits and fighting bosses at the end of stages. Two-palyer co-op is supported, with the second player being palette-swap of Player 1.

The game was designed by Tokuhiro Takemori who previously worked on Legendary Axe, and the basic game mechanic is similar -- in order to deal heavy blow with the axe the player needs to stop swinging it for a while. The NES version released after the Arcade game, while generally having same gameplay, features completely different level layouts, enemy designs and story.
